Knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and the evidence of rulings, as well as knowledge of Islamic jurists who are referred to in this field, are important matters that scholars should pay attention to and clarify to people. This is because Allah, the Exalted, created the two weighty things for His worship, and knowledge of this worship can only be attained through understanding Islamic jurisprudence, its evidence, and the rulings of Islam. This can only be achieved through knowledge of the scholars who are relied upon in this field among the leaders of Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence.
Scholars are the heirs of the prophets, and the prophets did not inherit dinars or dirhams; rather, they inherited knowledge. Whoever takes it has taken a great share. One of the causes of happiness for a servant and one of the signs of salvation and success is to have understanding in the religion of Allah and to be knowledgeable in Islam, insightfully following the religion of Allah as mentioned in the Noble Quran and the Sunnah of His trustworthy Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
Allah has elevated the status of scholars and raised their ranks. They are knowledgeable about Allah and His law, acting upon what has come from Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him. They are the scholars of guidance and the lamps in the darkness. They are knowledgeable about the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and it was said about them by Allah: “Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge – [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” (Aal Imran: 18) And He said about them: “Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.” (Al-Mujadila: 11) And He said about them, Exalted is He: “Indeed, only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.” (Fatir: 38) It is authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: “Whomever Allah intends good for, He grants him understanding in the religion.” This great hadith indicates the virtue of jurisprudence in the religion.
Jurisprudence in the religion means understanding the Book of Allah, understanding the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, jurisprudence in Islam, from the standpoint of the principles of Islamic law, the commandments of Allah that He has ordained for us, what He has prohibited, having insight into what the servant owes to Allah and His servants, and having fear of Allah, venerating Him, and watching over Him for what the servant does and leaves.
For the believer, seeking knowledge, understanding in the religion, insight, and taking care of the Book of Allah, approaching it, contemplating it, reciting it, benefiting from it, taking care of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, understanding it, acting upon it, and memorizing what is facilitated from it, are all essential. Whoever turns away from these fundamentals and neglects them, it is a sign that Allah did not intend good for them. It is a sign of destruction and ruin, a sign of corruption of the heart and deviation from guidance. We ask Allah for safety and well-being from everything that angers Him.
Therefore, it is worthy for us, Muslims, to understand the religion of Allah, to learn what is obligatory upon us, to take care of the Book of Allah with contemplation, reason, recitation, and application, to also care for the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, through memorization, application, and understanding, and to also seek answers to what is unclear to us. A person should ask about what is unclear to them and ask those who have more knowledge than them to benefit, in accordance with the saying of Allah, Exalted is He: “So ask the people of the message if you do not know.” (An-Nahl: 43)
