The Noble Quran

The Noble Quran

The Noble Quran is the word of Allah, revealed and uncreated, sent down to His Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in both wording and meaning. The Noble Quran is the eternal book of Islam, its greatest miracle, and guidance for all humanity. Allah says, ‘This is a Book We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darkness into the light.’ We worship Allah by reciting it day and night. Allah says, ‘Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a transaction [i.e., profit] that will never perish.

In the Quran, there is guidance for behavior and organization of life. Whoever holds onto it has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. Whoever turns away from it and seeks guidance elsewhere has indeed gone far astray. Allah has made all creatures incapable of producing even a surah like its shortest chapter. Allah says, ‘And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful.’

The Quran is written in copies, preserved in hearts, recited on tongues, and heard by ears. Engaging with the Quran is one of the best acts of worship and among the greatest forms of drawing closer to Allah. How could it not be, when each letter of it is rewarded with ten virtues, whether recited or pondered upon? Allah has entrusted in it knowledge of all things: rulings, laws, parables, wisdom, history, and the system of the universe. Nothing is left unclarified, and no aspect of life is neglected.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, ‘The Book of Allah contains the news of what came before you, knowledge of what will come after you, and judgments for matters among you. It is the decisive speech; it is not a jest. Whoever abandons it, Allah will crush him, and whoever seeks guidance from other than it, Allah will lead him astray. It is Allah’s firm rope, the wise reminder, and the straight path. Desires do not lead it astray, tongues do not confuse it, scholars never have enough of it, and its wonders never cease. It is the Book about which the jinn said when they heard it, ‘Indeed, we have heard an amazing Quran.’ It is the truth when affirmed, the justice when judged by, and the reward when acted upon. Whoever calls to it is guided to a straight path.

This is our book, our constitution, our beacon of guidance. If we, Muslims, do not recite it, should we expect the Jews and Christians to do so? Allah says, ‘And [this is] a Book We have sent down [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.’ What a great reward for whoever recites the Book of Allah, commits it to memory, and applies its teachings. For every letter, Allah grants ten virtues, and Allah multiplies for whom He wills.

A Word on Memorizing the Noble Quran:

Congratulations to you, memorizers of the Book of Allah. Congratulations on this great reward and immense recompense. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, ‘No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that tranquility descends upon them, mercy envelops them, angels surround them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him.

You are the people of Allah and His chosen ones. You are most deserving of reverence and honor. Abu Musa al-Ash’ari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, ‘Among the reverence for Allah is honoring a grey-haired Muslim, and honoring the carrier of the Quran who does not exaggerate in it nor deviate from it, and honoring the just ruler.’

You are the best of people for the people. You have been granted this virtue by the tongue of your Prophet, peace be upon him. Uthman ibn Affan reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, ‘The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.

You, the people of the Quran, hold the highest position and the loftiest status. You have reached a high station, and ascended to a lofty rank, by memorizing the Book of Allah. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, ‘Indeed, Allah will elevate some people by this Book and bring others low by it.

The memorizers of the words of Allah, you are the greatest of creatures in reward and the most abundant in virtue. How could you not be, when you carry in your chests the words of your Lord, and walk in the light of your
